*On Casual Fridays, we make recommendations about books, websites, movies, etc. We would love to hear your Casual Friday recommendations, too.

One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to have more fun more often. Today’s recommendation helps me with my resolution in the grocery store, in the car, anywhere I have my iPod or computer.
I’ve found a podcast that I absolutely LOVE. The ladies on it are candid, quick witted, and a ton of fun. If podcasts were food, their podcast would be dessert!
It’s called The Satellite Sisters. They are 5 real sisters who get together once a week via Skype to podcast. What a blessing to have 5 great personalities in one family.
From their website…
Julie, the oldest sister,is the foreign correspondent, the sister who has lived and worked in Moscow, Russia and Bangkok, Thailand. Julie and her husband are now living in the foreign land of Dallas, Texas, but boards international flights spontaneously. She is currently working on a “girlfriend trip” to North Korea. Before becoming a world traveler, Julie worked at and taught in a number of leading U.S. universities and business schools including UCLA, Stanford and Tulane. She has a degree in Government from Smith College and an MBA from Penn State. She and her husband have two twenty-something sons and deeply regrets that GPS tracking technology was not available when her sons were teenagers. Her new, huge role is as “Nana.” Julie wants to put the word out, grandchildren are irresistible.
Before creating and launching Satellite Sisters, Liz, the second oldest sister, was the Vice President of Global Marketing at NIKE, where she worked for a decade. She has twice been named Woman of the Year in the sports business. She quit her job at NIKE on her 40th birthday to go get a life. Instead, she has spent the years since then running Satellite Sisters Omnimedia (not the company’s real name – she just likes to dream) and then going to run marketing at OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, while blogging at www.satellitesisters.com in her increasingly rare spare time. She began her career in marketing, branding and communications after graduating with a degree in Comparative Literature from Brown University. She is also the sister who is geographically closest (10 blocks) to our 80-something parents, so there’s that. Occasionally, she sneaks away to a bungalow in Bend, Oregon with her dog Ferris.
Sheila, the middle sister, is currently teaching third grade on Los Angeles. Her philosophy of teaching is simple: every child can learn, just not on the same day. Sheila is also a two time individual Gracie Allen Award Winner for comedy. Her natural ability to laugh at herself and tell funny stories comes in handy when faced with 23 nine year-olds on a daily basis. Sheila is a swimmer, and went on one strenuous hike recently. As the self-styled entertainment reporter on Satellite Sisters, Sheila was barred from many red carpet events. Her public stalking of Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Ang Lee did not make the local news and so, Sheila is still available for comment. Entertaining Sheila would not be stopped, and she succeeded in churning out close to 100 movie reviews, from the comfort of her own Cozy Couch. Some reviews even made it to air. It was there, on the couch she literally loved to death, where her true calling emerged: celebration of the trivial and mundane!
Sheila still loves the movies, still buys Womens World at the checkout and is still single.
Monica, the second youngest sister, has spent most of her career as hospital R.N. specializing in cardiac care. She has spent more than two decades in intensive care units, and operating rooms and working on studies for approval of new medical devices. Currently she is a clinical research coordinator for acute Stroke trials at a university hospital. Monica leads many of the health and wellness discussions on Satellite Sisters and also has her own segment entitled “Science of the Obvious,” in which she examines studies that come to such earth-shattering conclusions as “Teens’ Brains May Not Be Ready To Make Good Decisions” and “Most Adult Women Do Not Get Enough Sleep.” She has a B.S. from Georgetown, is single and lives in Portland, Oregon.
Lian, the youngest sister, is a mother, writer, talker, blogger, novelist, podcaster and serial school volunteer. In addition to her work with Satellite Sisters, Lian’s created The Chaos Chronicles about her life as a busy working mom. The Chaos Chronicles is a website, blog and weekly podcast. In November 2010, he first novel Helen of Pasadena will be published by Prospect Park Books. She is also a featured contributor at oprah.com and makinglifebetter.com as a parenting expert. Lian lives in Pasadena, California and is married to real estate guy/runner Berick and has two sons in the teen/tween age range. Her degree from Pomona College is in Classics, which comes in handy in Greek restaurants. Connect with Lian on Twitter @chaoslian or on Facebook.
Love,
Lisa
